Cheval Blanc Randheli reclaiming 5 new islands

Editor's Blog: has received unconfirmed reports that say Cheval Blanc Randheli is making 5 new sandbank-like islands near the resort. It is likely that they are pumping sand from its massive lagoon. Presently we are not able to determine for what particular purpose they will use these small islands. It could be to build private villas, to use for excursions or private dining. But, 5 seems to be a little too many if not for building rooms.

Dredging and sand reclamation works are normally carried out after conducting the Environment Impact Assessment Report which is required by the government. Maldives have strong penalties for breaching environmental laws. Few islands such as One&Only Reethi Rah are unusually different from its original features before the development as resort. Usually the public do not know the extent of permits given by the government. Hence, it is not easy to identify islands that go through unlawful developments. If the concerned government department keeps approved layouts on their website it would be easy to monitor and maintain environmental standards.
